About Us

Our exclusive outfitting hunting area consists of 100,000 acres in North-Eastern Saskatchewan, consisting of rugged forest, rivers and creeks, meadows and logged over areas, located on the boundary of farmland and the banks of the Carrot River, all fantastic deer habitat.

Smoky Burn Outfitting's Story

As owner/operator/guide, Mike was born and raised in the area and began outfitting for big game in 2004.  Since that time we have had the opportunity to make many clients dreams come true and create lasting memories.  Sometimes the memories are not just about taking a trophy animal, sometimes its making new friends and enjoying each others company.  We have clients that are no longer clients, they are friends that have hunted with us since our very first season of outfitting.

It is a pleasure to be host to such a great area and to serve hunters from all over the world in our modern accommodations here at Smoky Burn Outfitting. Many of our clients have become great friends and return regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smoky Burn Outfitting prides itself on having expert guides for hunting and fishing in the Great Saskatchewan, Canadian Outdoors! To help you get trophy wild game it’s best to come prepared. Here are some FAQ’s we get asked. If you have any other questions please contact us today or visit our resources section.

BEAR HUNTS: If you are hunting with a bow in bear season and do not have a rifle with you can wear camo and no colours need to be worn.

WHITETAIL DEER: If you are hunting whitetail with a bow in October, you can wear camo- no colours are needed. If you are hunting with a bow in November, when the rifle season is on, you must wear colours.

All that is needed for colours is a blaze orange vest – “NEW”. A orange hat or toque will also be required.

Yes, we have some heaters, if you want to ensure you have a heater it is best to bring your own. We do not supply propane.

In the past five years, the weather seems to have warmed up a lot. Temperatures in the morning can be below freezing. The appropriate clothing is your best option to keep you comfortable. In extreme weather we have heaters.

We have all kinds of stands. We use ladder stands, lock on, permanent tree stands, ground blinds, elevated blinds (8-10 feet up) and 1-man pop up tent blinds.

The rut in Saskatchewan can run any time in November. The pre-rut is usually in the second week in November with bucks chasing. Doe’s usually are not receptive. Week 3 and 4 in November usually brings the peak rut activity. In recent years, the weather seems to affect the rut a little more!

The most common calibre is a 300. 7mm is also common. The bucks in our area have tremendous body size, so you want some knock down power.

When you harvest your trophy, we cape the animal and freeze the hide and clean up the skull for transport back home with you.

There are 6-8 hunters at any given time within camp.

We run 2-3 hunters to 1 guide in our camp. You travel from camp to a staging area and then use a four-wheeler/ side x side/ snowmobile to reach the stand site.

Tips are certainly appreciated. Our guides, cook, and cleaning staff work very hard to make your hunt a trip of a lifetime. Most clients use 10 – 20% of the total hunt cost for the guide.

Most clients give the cooks $100 for their week of hard work and our cleaning girls usually receive $100.00 per hunter.

Presently, in Saskatchewan, we have a 1-deer limit. When you harvest your animal the hunt is over. Smoky Burn Outfitting is totally fair chase in its hunts with over 100,000 acres of prime Whitetail Deer habitat under its belt.

We do not offer airport transportation. It is your responsibility to get from the airport to the lodge and we will take care of you after that.

Yes, there is cell service in all areas. Whether your carrier works up here or not is unknown, but we see that most of our clients cell phones do work.

An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than two rifles.

Handguns, semi-automatic and automatic weapons are prohibited in Canada. Silencers are also banned as well as any knife that opens by spring action. Hunting and sporting guns are allowed in provided they are going to be used for sport, or for competition. You may need to provide proof of this, such as a permit from a Canadian firearms registrar. Hunters are permitted 200 rounds of ammunition before fees are imposed and competitors are allowed 1500 rounds. ALL WEAPONS MUST BE DECLARED AT THE BORDER! Failure to do so will result in confiscation of the weapon and criminal charges. A Firearms Declaration can be bought for $50 and will be good for one year. Other banned weapons include: mace, nunchaku sticks, brass knuckles, belt-buckle knives, blowguns, stun guns, trigger enhancing devices, finger rings with blades, and spiked wristbands and collars. If you feel that you were treated unfairly, note the officer’s badge number and name, and ask to see the supervisor. If this doesn’t get you anywhere, write a letter of complaint to the port director at that particular point of entry. This also applies to US Customs when re-entering the States. Remember to be polite. For other resources or forms please visit our Resources section below.
